Yoga Sutra Chapter 4 with GMR
Live Teaching: Aug 22 – 26, and Aug 29 – Sept 02, 2022
Logline: Imagine, your whole life you’ve been wearing tinted sunglasses. Glasses that make the entire world, everything, seem red. But the problem is that you don’t know that it is the glasses that are making the world appear red. You think the world is really is red.
This is how misunderstanding infects every single perception we’ve ever had and leads in turn to every single negative thought and negative emotion that we have ever experienced.
So how are we going to fix this problem? If everything seems red, how can we see not red? How are we going to use the broken instrument of the mind to fix itself? How can the problem also be the solution? How and why would we ever take the glasses on?
In this 4th and final chapter of the Yoga Sutra, Master Patanjali explains this and other very challenging questions as he leads us through the final stages of our journey to the state of Kaivalya, or Total Purity.
As a very special finale to our 4th course covering this excellent text, we will open a “Box of Jewels” and review all of the main ideas from each of the four chapters.
Target Students: This course is designed for yogis who have a desire to learn yogic philosophy.
Many people will access this course through the greater Geshe Michael community and will be familiar with his explanation of worldview. For these students, they will learn these ideas as presented in one of the most famous yogic texts ever written. This will allow them to share this knowledge with others in a different context.
For others not so familiar with Geshe Michael’s teachings, they will uncover a new perspective on the Yoga Sutra, one that is simple, yet profound, and immediately applicable to life.
Specifically, the YSC4 course is for students interested in exploring Patanjali’s explanations of the final stages of transformation as well as some beautiful explanations of some challenging questions – like how do we use the broken instrument of the mind to fix itself?
What: Geshe Michael Roach will be teaching the fourth chapter of Master Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. The teaching will occur with a small in-person audience (~15 people, mostly sponsors and staff). The transmission will be shared by Zoom webinar. The Asian Classics Institute will produce the technical and translation services for the event. YSI staff will assist distributors in securing their links and live stream feed.
How does the mind perceive itself? There are even discussions on the possibility of emanating different bodies and different minds! This is the perfect course for someone who wants to master their mind, use their inner world to transform their outer world, and ultimately achieve their highest potential.
All registrants will be provided homework, quizzes, and a final exam. For students who would like to receive a YSI certificate of completion for the Yoga Sutra Chapter 4, they must submit all homework, quizzes, and a final exam. Each distributor is responsible for grading their community’s work according to these guidelines. The distributor will then send a list of students who have completed the required coursework to YSI for certificate completion and distribution.
In addition to GMR’s teaching, there will be daily meditations and yoga classes taught by YSI staff, 30-minute Sanskrit classes taught by Michael Johnson, and in-depth discussion groups led by Earle Birney, bringing students a deeper understanding of the material.
Where: LIVE on Zoom and in-person in Sedona, Arizona.
When:
Classes will be held from Aug 22 – 26, and Aug 29 – Sept 02, 2022. The daily schedule is shown below:
